24.A Surgical Caps B. Wheelchair Seat Covers
Some patients use surgical caps to keep their hair out of their faces while in recovery. But they are also very useful to nurses; when a child is stripped of all his or her toys, blankets and items of comfort, these surgical caps can be a nurse’s only tool of cheerful distraction when a scared child (or any patient) is going into surgery! Finished size approximately 15” diameter for small and 18” diameter for medium (average adults). Wheelchair seat covers can be made the same but larger and tucked under the seat. However, chair models vary widely so please schedule a visit to Sewing Team for a custom chair fitting.
Instruction Summary: 16” (cotton or poly) circle diameter, tuck 1/2” hem inner circle (or serge), iron, sew, leaving 1/2” tube to insert 17” of 1/4” elastic with safety pin pushing through. Overlap ends, sew, tuck in and sew shut but allow elastic to move. Use applique to make fabric fun if needed. Adult Size substitute with 19” diameter circle and 20” elastic. Serger option available.

By the one-of-a-kind nature of the students’ handmade items, they will vary greatly from the sample photos.
